Gender ideology refers to a set of beliefs about gender identity and expression that often emphasizes the fluidity and spectrum of gender beyond the established binary understanding of male and female. While this ideology aims to promote inclusivity and acceptance, it inadvertently marginalizes or erases the experiences and identities of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals.
Historically, the LGB movement has focused on sexual orientation, advocating for the rights of individuals to love and form relationships with others of the same sex. This movement has made significant strides in achieving legal and social recognition for LGB individuals. However, the rise of gender ideology has shifted the focus from sexual orientation to the myth of gender identity, leading to tensions within the broader LGBT community.
One of the primary concerns is that gender ideology overshadows the unique experiences and challenges faced by LGB individuals. For example, the emphasis on gender identity leads to the perception that same-sex attraction is less important or a choice. One of the main tenets of the LGB liberation movement was to make people realize that being LGB is not a choice, but when sex and gender are choices then same sex attraction is meaningless. This results in the erasure of LGB identities and the specific issues they face, such as discrimination based on sexual orientation.
Lesbian and gay spaces, which have historically been safe havens for LGB individuals, are now enforced to accommodate a broader range of made up gender identities. While inclusivity is important, this dilutes the focus on same-sex attraction and creates environments where LGB individuals feel less safe, represented and understood.
A famous example of this is from the UK. A long running lesbian speed dating event came to an end when a trans identified man asked to take part. At first the organizers permitted the man but soon women reported feeling unsafe by his presence in the women's restroom. The organizers asked the man to leave. This was met with swift action from the non binary and trans community. The event which had been running without issue for almost five years was shut down. The owner stated that he couldn't promote an event that excluded anyone.
Bisexual individuals, who are attracted to both sexes, may find themselves caught in the middle of this debate. On one hand, gender ideology’s emphasis on fluidity can validate bisexual experiences. On the other hand, the focus on gender identity may overshadow the importance of sexual orientation, leading to a lack of recognition for bisexual individuals’ unique experiences.
While the myth of gender ideology aims to promote inclusivity and acceptance, it is important to recognize and address the concerns of LGB individuals who feel that their identities and experiences are being overshadowed or erased.
Excellent points made about gender ideology overshadowing same-sex sexualities via the LGBTQ+ umbrella.
